Could the father have been in the Army in India? There's a Martha Patterson b 1885 Edinburgh area - close enough to Linlithgow - with grandparent Jane Halliday, and others including a William and Martha Patterson in 1891 in Midlothian. Jane had a daughter Jemima in earlier records, can't find her later, either.
I can't find an Ada Lilian anywhere yet, sorry. You could try tracing William and Martha back in earlier Scottish censuses, check out names of likely sons, see if any entered anything like Army or Trading companies or administration there, and see if that gives a likely lad to try and trace that way? Nothing else comes to mind, sorry
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

ThrelfallYorky  :)

Thank you for your input , I have much more from that , than I had a few miniute's ago  ;D

I wondered if her parents had been in the indian army because of her birth in 1877, then came back and had Martha in abt 1886 in Scotland,
Her husband Mr stuart is a total mystery as is most other bits.

There is a national probate listing, for 1935,which says Ada Lillian Stuart.......see Bathe for Stuart or De Bathe.....will investigate more.  ;D

The probate index says she was single woman,so maybe not the right lady?

DEATHS Dec 1934

De Bath    Ada L R   age 59    Steyning    2b   382

How firm is the birth date?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGQ5-6S6

Following siblings as well:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGHS-JLR

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG3L-YSZ

Yes, you're right, the dates are a bit against it...

Also a thought, Ada Lilian and Margaret could have different mothers.
