1539 Staffordshire Muster Roll - Penkhull

Hi all,

I'm looking for some information on the above document as I believe one of my ancestors, William Meare (1520-1578) may appear on it. I've tried to find out more about the document online and where it would be viewable but have had no luck finding any details.

Any help would be much appreciated,

I'm not a Staffordshire expert, but Penkhull appears to be in Pirehill Hundred, so this may be the item you're after ...

Hello Donna,

this muster roll is transcribed is the Staffordshire Historical Collections volume 5, 1902.  This series is available at most of the Staffordshire archives venues as well as The National Archives and the Society of Genealogists.  I have a note that Penkhull supplied 18 men with 4 horses but I did not transcribe their names.

Have you looked for your ancestors in the records of the Manor of Newcastle?  These cover Penkhull and go back to well before 1539 and are a gold mine.

The Tittensor family appears in Penkhull back to the 14th century.  I have done a lot of work on Penkhull records at Kew and in Staffordshire and would be happy to share.  What else do you know about your ancestors in Penkhull?

I live in Penkhull and the muster roll you mention sounds very interesting. I can not say that I have seen it so I must try and track it down. However.. In "The Royal Manor of Penkhull" by Richard Talbot there is a considerable amount of information.
A 1414 survey of Penkhull lists William de Meer as holding 2 lands of socage worth 2d and 4d for land recently brought under cultivation.
From the Newcastle (u - Lyme) court records.
26th April 1477 William Mer made affray on Thomas hudson the younger and intended to strike him with a staff and that the same  Thomas did the same and that Stephen Hudson made affray on William Mere and intended to strike him with a staff.
Richard Meare appears as a witness in land seized from Thomas tyttensor for non-payment of rents on 30th Sept 1567

William Meare is mentioned in the hearth tax figures for 1662

Hi all.

Wow thank you some really good pointers to delve into here 

The William Meare I've mentioned above is based in Norton in the Moors
Nr stoke. While researching him I found a note on someone else's research that
He is mentioned on the muster roll.

I'm uncertain of his link with Penkhull as yet however looking at www.norton-green.com under the
Lords of the manner section there is quite a bit of information about a Sir William de Mere who
Was high sheriff of Staffordshire in 1314 so perhaps some connection with Penkhull as I research further back.

Please let me know of anything you are looking out for and I'll keep my eyes open while researching.

Sir William de Mere was Lord of Norton in the 19th year of Edward II. It was afterwards divided between the Barons of Stafford and Audley.
"The family name of Meare has been kept up in Norton until recent times (circa 1840's), and a principal estate now belonging to Alfred Hales, Esq., of Norton-Green House, was formerly the property and residence of his maternal grandfather, Mr Richard Meare."

It wouldn't surprise me if William Meare of Norton and William Meare of Penkhull were the same person. They may have owned land all around the Potteries

It will certainly be an interesting line to research. I'm trying to track down William Meare b.1520 in the moor parents to work out the link. I've seen them listed elsewhere as William and Elizabeth but have yet to find a supporting record for this.
