Joseph Garlick of Hadfield, postmaster. I've had to admit defeat!
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 11:48 BST (UK) »
I've been trying to find the death/burial of Joseph Garlick who was letter receiver from 1848 and then postmaster in Hadfield until sometime between 1851 and 1861 when the census reveals his son William had taken over the job.

I have the death certificate of Joseph's wife Sophia in 1859 where she is described as wife of Joseph, postmaster, so he was still alive then. I ordered it from Derbyshire record office and spoke to a really helpful lady who looked at all the Joseph Garlick deaths she had access to but she said none could be mine by virtue of their ages. She did suggest looking over the border into Cheshire - maybe he'd gone to live with one of his children who'd moved away - but I've had no luck.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

When is the last census that you have him on 1851 or 1861?

Sorry. I haven't been able to pinpoint his baptism but according to the censuses it was around 1783, not to be confused with the one relating to Joseph son of Samuel and Martha on 17 May 1783.

He was last found in 1851 when he was living on Waterside as letter receiver with his wife Sophia, daughter also named Sophia and 3 other people referred to as visitors?

Hi Rosie. Yes that's the right family - born Gamesley, not Jamesley which is a mistranscription but I don't think that is the right baptism (based on Graham Hadfield's excellent site and Samuel's will of 1827 which indicates his Joseph was already dead by then). I think daughter Sophia died in 1854.
