Arthur Clegg, fireman, died and was interred in Copenhagen
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 22:12 BST (UK) »
My 3x great grand uncle, Arthur John Clegg, was born in 1853 in London, although he grew up in Preston. According to the family grave, and to other family members, Arthur was interred in Copenhagen in October 1883, which I assume is because he died there. As far as I know, the Clegg family have no other links to Denmark. Can anyone help me find out why Arthur was in Copenhagen in 1883? As late as 1881 he was living in Preston with his wife and daughter. There is a possibility that they all moved there as I can't find his wife Betsy or his daughter Elizabeth Alice in the 1891 census.

His death was registered on the Consular indexes as "John"

1881-1885 deaths
John Clegg, Copenhagen, Volume 7, page 381

You can order this death certificate from the GRO, which might give you a little more info about the circumstances of his death.

This may be Betsy and Elizabeth in the US in 1900, Betsy remarried and with another daughter, Margaret Morley

Betsy's remarriage as "Clegg" in the US in 1886:

"Fireman "    was he a fireman on the railway - or with the fire service - or even a fireman on a ship (stoker )??
trying to establish why he was in Copenhagen ??...the obvious is a ships fireman - being Copenhagen is a large sea port
on the 1881 census does his occupation just say  " fireman "  ??
ADDED ...is this the marriage ?
13th May 1876 St John Preston
Arthur John Clegg .. bachelor aged 23 Labourer abode 3 Carroll Street
Betsy Blackburn - spinster aged 22 Weaver 3 Slater Street (x)
Grooms father the late Joseph Clegg an Artist
Brides father Richard Blackburn a Spinner
witness Thomas Cocker Margaret Cocker
Married by Banns   William Ritson
Notes - Groom signed request    ????...what does this mean ?...never seen it before

Banns: St John, Preston, Lancashire, England
Arthur John Clegg - 22, 3 Carroll Street
Betsy Blackburn - 22, 3 Slater Street
    Notes: [Groom signed request]
    Groom Residence: 2 years
    Bride Residence: 2 months

ADDED
They are in the mothers house in 3 Carroll Street in 1881 census ...
just says "fireman"

out of curiosity - Joseph Clegg - Arthurs father - on the marriage record he is an Artist ..do you have him in an earlier census in Preston ? 1871 ?....Arthur would be around 17 ..may give a clue as to his occupation ..
added again ...doesn`t give occupations

Yeah, that's the correct Arthur Clegg. I have just received a copy of his death certificate, which says that he died on board the SS Chirton in Copenhagen harbour on the 14th of October, 1883. He was a fireman on board the ship, which was registered in North Shields. The shipmaster, W.A. Firth, informed the British Consulate of Arthur's death on the 15th of October.

I've no idea, they didn't list the cause of death.

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk only shows that there was no (as far as I can tell) major incident on the Chirton at the time - she arrived into Copenhagen just before his death (reported in a UK newspaper on the 13th), and left a week or so later (departure reported on the 19th).

Of course this doesn't mean it wasn't an accident, just that if there had been it wasn't "newsworthy".
