1861 Census (England & Wales Shipping) Falmouth
« on: Thursday 24 April 14 14:39 BST (UK) »
FreeCen has an entry under RG9/4495 ED.08 CP.Falmouth Fol.21 Address.Europe (Jersey).
The master John Thos. Starck and ship described as 43 ton coastal smack.
I am having difficulty finding such a ship in April 1861. However, I can find a 43 ton ship named Escape (of Jersey).
Is anyone able to check the original entry to confirm the name of the ship please.

Looking at the image, it could well be Escape.

ESCAPE Official number 20694 Built in Calais in 1847, registered in Jersey 1858, 43 tons call sign NCGP. Owned in 1870 by John Oatley of Jersey, 1880 T J Lune College Hill, St Helier.
Her 1861 Logbooks and Crew agrements which will confirm her Master, should be at NMM Greenwich if anywhere. Can be obtained via
http://www.rmg.co.uk/researchers/library/crew-lists-agreements-and-official-logs-request-form

At 43 tons she was not listed in Lloyds Register. Had she been her master would be given there.

Thanks Seaweed,
I tried to see if Europe or Escape was listed in newspapers at Falmouth 1860/61. Not easy if you mention name of ship so stuck with "Shipping Falmouth" but found nothing.
I will follow it up next time at NMM as you have suggested.

Thank you to Groom and Seaweed.
I am happy that the correct name of the ship is "Escape" and that the Freecen entry has been a mistranscription.

Ancestry  has  the name  as Escape   also  , though   looking  at the image , I  can see why the transcriber   has  put Europe  as the name
