Antoing near Tournai Query
« on: Sunday 27 April 14 09:25 BST (UK) »
I have seen a Wiki reference to Antoing's flag - see attached. Does anyone know the history of the flag, the relevance of its design and also, its age? I'm wondering if 'bends wavy' was once part of a local landholder's arms?
Many thanks,
Bob

According to www.crwflags.com

The municipal flag of Antoing was adopted by the Municipal Council on 28 May 1990.

The stripes symbolise the 6 former Municipalities merged into Antoing.  The waves symbolise the river Scheldt.  The colours came from the arms of the former Lords of Antoing, used as the municipal arms of Antoing since 12 December 1953.

From the same website there is a photograph and history of the flag which flies over the castle at Antoing - yellow with red diagonal stripe - which may be a lot older.

The arms of the Lords of Antoing were: Gules a lion argent

I.E. a red shield, on which is a silver/white lion.
Hence the red and white colours of the modern flag.

The yellow/red (Or a bend gules) flag over the castle is from the arms of the Ligne family.

The arms of both Antoing and Ligne are mentioned, and pictured, in the "Armorial de Gelre" dating from 1370-1395.
