Walter Spencer - Merchant Navy 1854
« on: Saturday 03 May 14 23:30 BST (UK) »
Hello all
I have Walter Spencer b1823 Norfolk and cannot find him after the 1941 census when he was in Norfolk.  His father Robert Spencer was an Excise Officer so they moved around a bit.  I saw an index that gave a Walter Spencer as being in the Merchant Navy in 1854 so I am wondering if this might be him.  Is anyone able to give me information on this Walter.

Regards Ruth

Thanks Carole
definitely not Walter as 3 yo in 1841.  I think I may not be able to find him on the 1851 census because he was in the Merchant Navy.

Would like to confirm if he was indeed in the Merchant Navy.

Dear Seaweed

I think that is him given the birthdate  ;D

Do you know where i can get further information on him, whether he married, when he died, and any ships he may have served on.

Easier said than done,
All that can be usufully gleaned from his seamans ticket. Is that he undertook voyages on Hull registered vessels in 1846 and 1847. No ships names are mentioned. There are no entries after this date.
The only thing you can do to find out more of his seafaring career is to look at the crew agreements of Hull registered vessels 1845/47. This is not an easy task as these documents run into thousands and many have been lost or destroyed. You would need to visit the British National Archive to view.

I have searched all the maritime data bases I know. No mention of him.
You could however contact the Hull History Centre to see if they have anything on him in their collection of muster rolls.

Be sure to mention his seamans ticket number 129799 as this unique to him.
All I can find on the 1841 census is the information already given.
