*COMPLETED* Eusebuis Hopkins
« on: Friday 09 May 14 15:28 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any information I can about Eusebuis Hopkins. He was born in England in 1879 and emigrated to Canada in 1912. He was on the ship Mongolian and landed in Halifax Nova Scotia if anyone can find any more information about him I would be really grateful.

Hello and welcome to RootsChat  :).

What an interesting name, Eusebuis!

I was wondering how sure are you that he stayed in Canada? The reason I ask is that there is a Eusebius Hopkins age 59 on a UK incoming passenger list, departing Nova Scotia for Liverpool, arriving 29 Sep 1938. He gives his country of last permanent residence as England and states he intends to reside in England permanenly. His destination address is given as Falcon Buildings, Bidford-on-Avon and he is a farmer. Assuming this the same gentleman, this suggests he may have made more than one visit to Canada but didn't stay there?

I can't find any records in Canada relating to him so far.

PB

Edited to add: The above Eusebius can also be found on a UK outbound passenger list,  departing 01 Sep 1938 for Halifax. He gives his departure address as Church St Bedford-on-Avon and his intended place of residence is Canada. He also indicates that his last place of permanent residence was other parts of the British Empire which could indicate Canada.

So ..... all in all, there seems to be some conflicting info here. Still no sign of him in Canada after his 1912 arrival. Did he have another name that he might have used in Canada?

:)Thank you for the information you have found. Eusebuis was my grandmothers brother and the address you gave was my grandmothers. The information I have is a bit vague, I know he was in Nova Scotia because my grandmother used to write to him and then my mother took over writing to him. I just assumed when he went to Canada in 1912 that he stayed there I didn't know that he came back. I also know that he had some distant relatives in Canada.
I always remember my mother telling me that when she started writing to him he said to her I don't know why you are writing to me you are not getting any of my money I am leaving it to a cats home!
I am not sure whether he had another name he went by.

A possible sighting!

1962 voters list ....

Eusebius Hopkins Pensioner living at West River Sta in Pictou County Nova Scotia.

With a name like his, it is likely to be him, I think.

I don't see him on earlier lists at the moment.

Hi Sue and welcome to rootschat,

Another possible sighting...

1921 Canadian census

Ancestry has his name transcribed as Ernestine, but looking at the original census it looks
like Eusebuis to me.

Ernestine Hopkins
Head, Male, Single, age 40, birth year 1881
Year of Immigration 1912
Birth Place England
Occupation Farmer
Province Nova Scotia
District Pictou
Domicile Three Rivers (looks like Three Brooks to me)

Cheers,
DB

Hi Sue,

Some more possibles,

1935 Canada Voters List
Crisbus???Hopkins, farmer, Three Brooks

1940 and 1957 Canada Voters List
E. Hopkins, Pensioner, West River Stn. (which matches polarbear's 1962 find)

I think it is the same person. My guess is that he moved off the farm when he retired.

Cheers,
DB
