I think it says: Headmaster of Classical School?

Using the long s (the character that looks like an 'f'!), as was common when a double-s was encountered. ;D

Yes - Classical School.

(I think the gentleman in question, though, is called Hay S Escott, not Henry   :-\ )

According to this wikipedia entry for his son he was headmaster of Somersetshire College

His entry in a list of Oxford Alumni has him as head of SOmersetshire college, Bath 1858-73, following which he was rector of Kilve.

Lots of Sweet Escotts in this list - mostly clerics

It also appears that one of his staff for a year in the 1860s was Alexander Graham Bell. A biography of him states that the College (in the street called The Circus) was focused on getting gentlemen's sons into universities or the army, emphasizing the classics and maths, and with a small no of pupils (under 100) and a large number of staff

My goodness, what a great deal of wonderful help I have here.  Thank you so much.  My eyes are not so good these days and I was thinking that the 'Classical' was the name of a school.  Thank you all so much, as you have all given me a lot of information.

Many thanks, Jill

I see that, according to your signature line, you have interests in Portishead?

My home town! ;D ;D ;D

And I'm getting familiar with Yatton station these days - closest to my daughter, who lives in Clevedon.
