The Chestnuts Trowbridge
« on: Sunday 18 May 14 21:08 BST (UK) »
Can someone please do a lookup to see who lived at The Chestnuts in Trowbridge. Not sure if it resides on Union Street or Timbrell Street. I am trying to find out why my ancestor died there. He died in 1917. I was thinking if i find out who lived there and their occupation then may give a clue as to why he died there. Maybe it was a small hospital but im not sure

Thank you

The Chestnuts, in Trowbridge, is the Registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths?!

Or at least, it is these days ;D

A new Marriage Ceremony room opened earlier this year, but I can't find anything on the history of The Chestnuts? ::)

Hi There
Just came across your post while researching my own family. My great grandfather Watson Elliott owned the Chestnuts. I think the official address is Union Street although it stood on the corner where that road joined Timbrell Street. Watson lived here from at least 1911 until his death in 1933. So who was your ancestor? Watson's son William dies in 1917 - is that him? If so we are related, though somewhat distantly. I have the whole tree on Ancestry so am happy to send you an invite to view if you are interested.
To clear up any misunderstandings - there is now a modern Registry Office called "the Chestnuts" in Trowbridge but it's nowhere near and nothing to do with the house called the Chestnuts.  That was sold we think when Watson died and was later owned by the brewery Ushers. It was demolished in the 1960s but I can remember being taken to see it as a child.

Regards Mandy

Hi mandy
My ancestor was James Hudd. He died on the 26th of April 1917, He had a property at 10 and 11 union street where he also had his floristry shop until it was demolished to make room for st james hall. He ended up buying a property at 21 silver street with a shop on the ground floor. My guess is the two families knew each other.
