Hi Heywood,
Yes, that's right - the 1851 census entry for Isaac and his daughter is looking like the most likely.

Keyboard86 - that's them on the 1871 census. The daughter Mary was actually born in Goldenhill not Stalybridge (I have her birth cert). The mother Mary, the one i'm trying to trace, gives Kidsgrove as her POB, which is about 2 miles down the road, so on the other thread someone suggested that these 2 entries had been mixed up.
Also, the family they're lodging with are actually Tilstone, not Gibson, and its the son Daniel that she marries the following year

Hi Sarah

I have been to the local archives centre today. I have checked the baptism registers for Stalybridge. I couldn't find a Mary Moss/ Colstone/Coulston or any similar name. I couldn't find a Mary with a father named Isaac.

Heather :(
Also looked to see if there was a burial for anyone with a similar surname.

I'm attempting to track down my second great-grandfather who was born in Stalybridge in about 1875.

The only reference I've got is in the 1901 census he's down John Ross, age on last birthday 26, birthplace, Lancashire Staleybridge.

From the info on this forum I understand that should mean the birth will be registered in the Ashton under Lyme district.  When I search on the GRO index for any Ross's in that district 1874-76 it doesn't return any Johns...

Any pointers as to how to proceed?

Hi Meadowside
A warm welcome to Rootschat.
A Stalybridge birth should be registered in Ashton under Lyne but I cannot see one. There is one in Oldham which is only a few miles away
John Ross registered 1876 Oldham Below Town. His mother's maiden name is given as Leech.

Do you know who he married and when? Does the marriage certificate give his father's name?
Have you found him in 1911.We can't post details of 1911 on here but you can tell us what you know  ;)

Hi Heather,

Thanks for your welcome and help!

The only definite thing I have is the 1901 census, and he didn't get married so there's no certificate.

In the 1901 census he's listed age 26 as a boarder living in Deepcar, Stocksbridge (Sheffield), occupation Brick Works fitter.

On his son's birth certificate in 1905 he's still living in Deepcar and is down as as a machine fitter.

The only John Ross I found in the 1911 census is living in a different part of Sheffield (East Brightside) and is listed aged 36, boarder, occupation Spring Worker Labourer at Spring Manufacturers - his birthplace is listed as Oldham, Lancs.

It seems likely this is probably the same person then - do you think that's a fair assumption to make?

Many thanks for your help!
David
