AIF Medal Index Cards
« on: Friday 23 May 14 08:30 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can you help?

I am interested to know if WW1 Medal Index Cards exist for the AIF.

Looking for medal details of 4203 Private Alfred Williams who served with the 26th Australian Infantry Battalion before transferring to the 4th Field Company Australian Engineers during the 1914-1918 war.

I have searched on the Australian War Memorial web site with out success.

Any information which may help track down his Medal Index Card would be appreciated.

Chris

Nanna,

Many thanks for the quick response.

The Medal details are on file in letter format.  Pity, I was hoping there may have been a Medal Index Card similar to the ones held at The National Archives in Kew, London.

Regards

Ady,

Many thanks for quick response.

You probably have seen from the previous response from Nanna, I have managed to find what I was looking for. Some of the stamped lettering is faded and difficult to read, and the abbreviations do not mean anything to me.

Do you know if an abbreviations and alphanumeric code list exists which would help decipher the coding? Something similar to the TNA at Kew - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/medal-index-cards-ww1.htm.

Chris, the official abbreviations from the NAA for service records.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/defence/abbreviations.aspx

Another glossary has more abbreviations.  It is a site dedicated to a WW2 unit, but may help.

Im no expert on decyphering Australian Records the medals were issued to Australia House the date looks like 10/12/28??
He applied for medals as he was living in UK
Perhaps the numbers under the stamps correspond with entries on Australian Medal Roll ledgers as the ones on the MICs do with British ones.

Ady,

I think the date is 10/12/26. Any idea what the RP 8662 stands for?

I have also attached two further snap shots from the same document, which I am struggling to decipher. Your thoughts and interpretation of the text would be appreciated.
