Hi,
Is it not unusual for an illegitimate child to be named on the birth certificate with the father's name unless he attended the registration with the mother? Is there a RCE linked with the birth certificate?

Think I'd have a good look at a Alexander McKay born 1851 in the Gorbals to a Robert McKay and a Mary MacIntyre...could he be the same chap who is boarding in the Blackfriars district in 1891 - unemployed salesman...

Thanks jen - But no... her birth cert from SP clearly states mother Christine McAlpine & Alex McKay ..father... adds "Barracks, Perth. For Christina McAlpine, just states ..daughter of a gardener..which checks out.
All the best Patvp

Hi Patvp,
Handsome chap your grandfather - how old was he when he married Charlotte in 1910 - he looks very young in the football photo.

Does his service record show him to be in Glasgow at the time of the birth?

I can't see a service record on Ancestry for a soldier old enough to be her father

Is it not unusual for an illegitimate child to be named on the birth certificate with the father's name unless he attended the registration with the mother?

The father of an illegitimate child can be named on the birth certificate if, and only if, he accompanies the mother to the registrar's office and signs the certificate along with her. It cannot be added later to the original certificate.

However in certain circumstances, for example a court action for paternity, there can be an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE). If there is an RCE entry, there is a note on the certificate to say so and giving the volume and page number.

If the parents of an illegitimate child marry subsequently, the child can be re-registered under its father's name.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi all - Alex was 33 when he married Charlotte, but my eldest aunt (Heather Agnes) was born in 1908 ?? and was registered as Heather Agnes Hall.... parents married in 1910 !!  Jean born 1912, Alexina Isabella 1913 and Mum 1915 (Annie).  He was 38 when he died. He was 19 years and 1 month old when he joined up.
Yes Jen - He was a good looking chap, I was hoping to get some response to the football photo ?? that was why I put it on Scotland general enquiries..maybe should have put it on the Dunblane board ??...
Regards Patvp

Have you got Alex on the 1891 and 1901 census records? At the moment he remains only a possible father for Annie.

Was he still a soldier when he married Charlotte?

33 is quite old to getting married, was he a bachelor or widower?

Hi All,
There are a number of threads on Rootschat regarding Alexander and family - I think this one might answer your questions Sancti.
