Thanks K, yes I have them all in Alsop, they go back a long way there. It's the migration to N. Wales I'm hazy on. John William Mart worked in Penrhyn Quarries on the Little Orme. Thanks . Mart1t

Regarding Ernest Mart on the 1901 Census.

He is likely to be Ernest Mart Pte 8958 Royal Welsh Fusiliers. This Ernest would have enlisted in October 1905. In August 1914 he was either still a serving soldier or called up from reserves as he went to France to the 2nd Battalion. According to his Medal Card he landed 13th August. The 2nd Battalion is deemed to have landed 11th August. The medal card also gives an address of 8 Colwyn Terrace, Old Colwyn. In 1918 I can put him at 1 Glandwr, Old Colwyn and he is shown as 1st Garrison Battalion. This battalion served the war in Gibraltar. Garrison battalions were manned by men of a lower medical category than 'fighting' battalions. Ernest must therefore have been graded down through either a wounding or other factors. I haven't anything that indicates when.
(1911 the 2nd Battalion RWF were in India. The Ernest Mart shown on their Census list is aged 24 and shown as from Stoke, Staffordshire)

Gwil, thanks you so much for this. I have a photo of him with his brother, both in uniform c. 1914, but I know little about his service record. This data will provide for some research in the near future. His brother was George Hulbert Victor Mart who was brought up in Penrhyn Bay before enlisting in the East Lancs. Regt in 1912 and serving with the 6th Batt. in Galipolli. so he was a regular. The formation of this battalion is interesting in itself. He was later wounded and transferred to the Loyal North Lancs. and then the Cheshires and Labour Corps. That's as much as I know of his service. But thank you again. Maqrt1t (Terry).

Gwil, thinking about this the two Ernests you mention may well be the same person: France/India army service. The Ernest Mart I know was reputedly born in 'The Ship' hotel in Burslem, Stoke in 1887 before the family moved to Penrhyn Bay. This was located in Hot Lane but now no longer exists.
