George Ludlam

Hi. Looking for any records associated with George Ludlam, born around 1839, possibly in Essex. He left England, and was known to depart from South Africa in 1864 for New Zealand. Wanting to find parents and any other siblings if possible.

There is a George Ludlam bn c1838 Sheffield, Yorkshire who in 1861 is a Soldier in Portsea, Hampshire.  Could this be him, he could have been out in South Africa with the army.

The soldier in Portsea was with 2nd Battalion, 11th Foot, which did go to South Africa in the early 1860's - see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN/2012-04/1333987518

"An ancestor served as a private with the 2nd Batt., 11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, and according to his army attestation documents spent 3 years 9 months in "the Cape of Good Hope" (possibly also Natal).  That period was sometime between 1861 and 1865; in 1865 the unit moved from South Africa to "China" (Hong Kong) before returning to South Africa in 1866."

Thank you so much - this is all now fitting together amazingly.
And to now have his parents details as well - awesome.
It also gels with the family names - I had assumed that his father was possibly William due to the name being handed down the generations, and Mary Ann works as well.

Was the Essex link just a red herring then?  Sheffield is the other end of the country from Essex.
