Are Sussex Wills, (1852) available on-line?
« on: Wednesday 28 May 14 17:20 BST (UK) »
I've found this Index to the Will of William Pattenden on FindMyPast:

Death Duty Registers Indexe TNA ref IR27/302
William Pattenden lived in East Grinstead Sussex PCC 1852

Does anyone on here know, - are Sussex Wills from this period on-line? Or would I need to order it to view?

Cheers, Romilly.

Some PCC wills are on Ancestry - and that one is!!!!

So you may like to take a trip to your local library (if in the UK) or take out a 14 free trial, if you do not already have a subscription

Many thanks for looking lizdb and Sean.

No, I don't have current subs to Ances***, just FindMyPast.

Sean, - my only problem with that NA one is that it says 'Shopkeeper' and the William Pattenden that I'm looking for is a Brewer on the 1851 Census... (I suppose it depends on whether he was selling the Brew or not?) Does it have the same Reference as the Index that I posted? TNA ref: IR27/302

Hi Romilly,

Neither the National Archives or the Ancestry one has that reference that I can see. Do you know who his wife was?

Having looked at William in the 1851 census, he is the same one in the National Archives Will I mentioned.

His wife was Amelia Pattenden, (née Dearling).

I will go ahead and order it tomorrow. Many thanks for the help.

Cheers, Romilly.

Thats the one on Ancestry too ( I thought they were taken from NA)
It mentions his dear wife Amelia.

In fact it is a short will, leaving everything to Amelia who is sole executrix (at least thats what it seems just skimming through fairly quickly)

On the 1861 Census Amelia Pattenden is an inmate of the Almshouses of what is now called Sackville College in East Grinstead.

When I first found that, - I thought it was a Workhouse, - but apparantly not. It's still there, - I saw it last week when I visited East Grinstead.

I will order it for the sake of 'completeness'. William and Amelia Pattenden were my 4x GreatGrandparents.
