Wills in France
« on: Saturday 31 May 14 08:45 BST (UK) »

Can anyone offer some general advice about trying to trace a will made by an English person who was resident in, and died in, France in the 1930s?

Regards

is this any good? It does appear to suggest you have to make an English will as well, claytonbradley

If you have land or similar immovable assets in two countries, then two wills are usually necessary. However I believe the person I am researching was in fact "domiciled" in France and all his assets were in that country. In those circumstances, there would have been no need for him to make a will in England.

Do you know where in France? Not sure about 1930s but earlier wills/probates I would think would be in notarial records.   There is probably not any national index (can't find any references), but local genealogy groups might be able to point you in the right direction.   Look for (large town/department name) + cercle genealogie .

You might find some advice if you post on www.genealogie.com - with as much info of name, date, place as you can. It's best to write in French on that site.
