I have an ancestor who was of working age but listed as having "No Profession"...a later census gives him  "Registered Blind" so maybe a disability prevented your relative from working...Just a thought.

Is it not the 1851 and subsequent censuses that show a person's disabilities? I think there must be an omission in one or more of the censuses in this case. My grandmother is shown as a "lady's companion" in the 1881 census; there are two much older women in the house one is shown as "living on own means" the other simply blank.
