Parish record look up for Cannock
« on: Saturday 31 May 14 15:45 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to discover what happened to my 3xgr grandfather's 3 daughters.
He was Joseph Lee married to Betty (Elizabeth nee Goodlad).
The family were from the North Derbyshire/Sheffield area and moved to Cannock between 1822 and 1824. These are their children -
Mary b 1822 Norton Derbyshire
Elizabeth b 1824 Cannock baptised at St Lukes Mar 21
Samuel B  1828 Norton Derbyshire - I'm puzzled by this but everything points to it being the same family. Joseph's father died a few months before the birth so maybe that's why they went back.
James b Cannock 1831 baptised St Luke's Nov 20
Hester b Cannock 1836 baptised Cannock Independent Chapel Oct 29

In 1841 Joseph, Betty and the 2 sons are living back in Sheffield, but no sign of the daughters. Mary and Elizabeth were old enough to have been married or left behind in service but Hester would still be a child so presumably had died.
I haven't yet found any record of marriages or deaths for any of them in Cannock.
To complicate things further Samuel married in 1851 and a witness was Sarah Lee. Could one of the sisters second name be Sarah?
I would really appreciate it if someone could check the parish records for the Cannock area for possible marriages or deaths for Elizabeth and Mary and a death for Hester (could be Esther as Samuel's daughter was named that).

Thanks,
Sylvia

It might  be an idea to look at StaffordshireBMD for possible marriages after 1837.  If they are there, then the marriage venue will be given, which would make it easier to check the registers.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks Dionysus, I've checked that but unfortunately it's not her, she is too young and born in Wolverhampton. I did know about James but it's an idea to look around the area where he and Samuel later lived, I hadn't thought of that.

Bumble B I've just checked Staffordshire BMD and can't find any possible marriages for the Cannock area. I imagine the parish is St Luke. Elizabeth and James were both baptised there and after his marriage Samuel went back to Cannock for several years and his children were baptised there too. I feel that could suggest that there was still a relative in the area.

Ever so sorry, put the wrong reference in:  Class: RG11; Piece: 2858; Folio: 11; Page: 15.

This shows Elizabeth Homeshaw, 56, b. Cannock, widow, with children inc. Sarah 33 (bp. Sarah Ann 5 Dec 1847 Oldbury, parents Thomas Homeshaw & Elizabeth and George 31 bp. 12 Aug 1849 ditto.  Crucially resident at Albion Street.   Probate Calendar has Thomas Homeshaw died 7 Oct 1876 at Albert Street, executors inc. Sarah Ann Homeshaw, spinster, daughter.

Hope this helps.  Dion.

Thank you so much Dion. That's very likely to be my Elizabeth. I have checked a couple of censuses and her husband lived in Cannock too, also one of her children was born there. This is exciting I have been trying to find out wht happened to the daughters for years.

Thanks Weste, yes that fits with his later occupation.
