Thank you so much for taking the time to do this!    It is very much appreciated - William Jackson and Margrat Paterson are my ggggrandparents, and am anxious to follow up on the others.  Wonderful!

Hi,

I know it's been many years since you started this thread. But I am interested in photos for the Pairman headstones if you still have these (though I know my chances may be slim!).

There are just the two stones in Culter with a Pairman connection. This is the first, easy enough to read with just one inscription on it. A square pillar that reads "In memory of Jane Gladstone wife of Adam Pairman, Biggar. Died 20th Oct: 1853 aged 28 years".

Interesting surname, "pair man" is how poor man is pronounced in Scots dialect.

The second stone has, according to the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire pre-1855 book of Monumental Inscriptions, inscriptions on both sides. Fortunately for you, I photographed the side you are after.
The inscription reads - "Here Lyes Janet Pairman, she died Aprile 19th 1761 aged 49 years".
The transcription on the other side is - "John Whyte, tenant East-Mains, died 17th February 1751 aged 82 years. His wife Isobel Tait died 24th December 1741 aged about 70 years".

Thank you so much for responding, I didn't think you would have photos/inscriptions still. Really appreciate it! Yes, Pairman is an interesting surname, I am from Australia, but my Pairman ancestor immigrated from just outside of Biggar. It seems whilst it's a rare surname there are a lot of Pairmans in the Borders region.

There are one or two scattered around the southern churchyards of Lanarkshire, according to "The Upper Ward of Lanarkshire Monumental Inscriptions pre 1855" by Sheila Scott.
The majority of them are in Biggar, they seem to have been shopkeepers and merchants there, also prominent men on the town council.
There is a very interesting stone in Covington churchyard, the transcriber describes it thus -
"(On the back is carved a square & compasses, chisel and mell). John Robertson died 20th November 1809 aged 91 years. Margaret Pairman wife of John Robertson died 5th April 1797 aged 57 years. (Original transcriber's note - the above was a Highlander who could speak to the army of the '45 in their own language - one gave him a gun. His wife was a Pairman of Biggar and their son was baron baillie of Biggar; descendants in South Africa have the gun and other relics - George Dickson's family).

The "'45" was of course, the army raised in 1745 by Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

Thanks for the extra info! Interesting story about John Robertson. I am aware of the other Pairmans you mention, there is a book about the country doctor Robert Pairman (whose ancestor eventually immigrated to New Zealand), though I am not directly related to that side (that I am yet to ascertain) - my ancestors were farmers in Biggar/Drumelzier/Peebles over the years.

Good evening Lodger, I am very late to the party here, but if you still have images for the stones relating to Barclay and Carrick these would be amazing to have, and hopefully would help open up a new avenue or two on my research of these families...
Thank you,
Anabanana
