51 Lisburn Rd, Burial Grounds
« on: Sunday 26 June 05 11:35 BST (UK) »
HI THERE,

I HAVE A RELATIVE WHO DIED AT 51 LISBURN RD, IN 1920, MY UNDERSTANDING IS THIS WAS THE "POOR HOUSE/WORKHOUSE" AT THE TIME, CAN ANYONE ADVISE WHERE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN BURIED WHEN THEY DIED HERE???

THANKS A BUNCH
WENDY

Hi Wendy

I have relatives that died here also, but they have been buired at Carnmoney and Mallusk ,which is where they actually lived before going to 51 Lisburn Road.

Perhaps Lisburn Road was used like a hosptial as most poor houses had infirmaries, so if your death certs says this address they may well have lived somewhere else before they died

Hi Steve,

That's my thot too, a rellie in Belfast, advised that it was the poor house at one point...the death in question was a 17 yr old girl, I have her death certificate, was my gran dad's sister Mae Close....I know the family lived at 6 Susan Street, Belfast at the time....However, not sure where any of them are buried....I'm headed to Belfast for holiday in August and was hopeful, may get some clues as to be able to prowl some of the cemeteries in attempt to locate some of my "Close's".....thanks so much for your insight....I sincerley appreciate you taking the time to respond...

All the Best

Across the pond Wendy...thats a big trip...lol

Enjoy it ...Ireland is wonderful

Maybe someone else with more local knowledge can suggest graveyards that might be near to Susan street ,so  by August you can narrow your search down.

17 with her whole life ahead...so sad...lets hope you find her

Hi Wendy. The Union workhouse was, where the new City Hospital is today two of the old buildings are still there today.

51 Lisburn Rd was the Belfast City Hospital

Friars Bush Cemetery  is on the Stranmillis Rd that not far from the workhouse & Hospital say 1 mile?.

Dundonald & Knock Cemeteries are on the East side of Belfast thats where Susan St was, she could be in one of them.
