Hi  I have in my family tree a Elijah Hodson shown born 1807 Douglas Green Manchester it is also on a 1881 census
can anyone help with the location of Douglas Green

Found a current street name name of Douglas Green in Salford, maybe the person in question remembered that part and assumed it was an area to put down for place of birth rather than Salford

I have had a look again at the census of 1861 which shows a place name of Murupter Lancashire is this around the same area do you know.

Before Pendleton became completely built up, (ie at the beginning of the 19th century) I think Douglas Green was a small collection of dwellings close to a mill or factory by the River Irwell, so was probably considered a place in its own right - distinct from Pendleton and Charlestown. By the mid 20th century it was just the name of a small park on Whit Lane.

I'm afraid Murupter doesn't ring any bells at all.

Having had a look at the 1861 I think it does actually say MANCHESTER, if you look at the letters in LANCASHIRE on the image that is the "a" and the "n" are the same and do you notice how the enumerator has added the "ster" above the manche.

I think it clearly says Manchester as said at  the start of my message.

Hi,

If you go to www.old-maps.com and type in Douglas Green and tick the address box you will get a selection.  Hit the first one and then view map, when it appears, Douglas Green is in the right and corner of the pink square. If you enlarge the view  you will also see Whit Lane that Wendy mentioned.

I also took a look at the 1861 and agree with Wendy that it is definitely Manchester.
