They are suggesting here that it is a Denial of Service Attack

Both Ancestry and FindaGrave are down as I write this

Having speed read your link, as most of it goes over my head, I don't like the part lower down which refers to a permanent denial of service attack.

What does anyone get out of such attacks? What sort of people do such things? What a strange world this is sometimes.

Hope our trees and account information is safe.
Best wishes HL

Have been gardening too and just checked ancestry and back on again (at 18.40) but how long for I wonder!   Just wish now that SEAX payment system would get sorted after almost a week of not being able to purchase subscriptions.

The same type of people who infect PCs with ransome software or malicious software to use your PC to flood spam, etc, on others - as per recent media reports.

I see ancestry have admitted it was a DDoS attach - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0153h/.  Not very much they can do in the circumstances but sit it out and wait for it to stop.  The aim is usually to take the site offline not to steal data from them.  Its unfortunately not that uncommon an issue. >:(

Thanks smudwhisk.......at least our personal information is safe then, although I stupidly always stay logged in.

I still fail to understand what kicks anyone gets from such a moronic pastime though.
Best wishes HL

Thank you for the info, relieved no data was compromised.  The site is still down for me.  Am sure it will all be up and running as normal very soon.  Seems they are doing all they can.

It is beyond me why people do this, unless to gain info and steal.

I think if the aim was to do that, they would make it so public. ;)  Otherwise no real benefit if people are aware as remedial action can be taken.
