More about Distinguished Conduct Medal
« on: Wednesday 18 June 14 13:53 BST (UK) »
Have just found out that my great uncle was awarded the DCM during WW1

I've found the citation but was wondering if anyone knew if I could find out more information on where it happened other than 'France' which is all I've been able to uncover

61779 Percy Cherry and the date on the citation is 30/10/18 but I don't know if that was the date of the event or the date it was awarded

According to the citation The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) (possible 15/17 on one document) - from what I can make out joined them from previous regiment on 5th April 1918.  Will try and attach a bit of the record to see if anyone can interpret

Sorry it's such bad quality - I think I can see Etaples in there in September, but can't make out between there and the Awarded Disc Conduct Medal

He wouldve been awarded it between April and Aug 1918 dates covered are 26th April to 8th August 1918 so thats where i would start with the 15/17 War diaries.

He also served post war with Leicester Regiment

Edit looks like you had a result on GWF

30 oct 1918 is date details were published in supplement to London Gazette hope this link works!

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30983/supplement/12815.

This notice doesn't give details of where action took place. I had great uncle also awarded DCM and location was written in copy of citation taken from Gazette and held in National Archives. These records are free to download from National Archives (Collection WO391) but files are large, not well indexed and, unfortunately seem to stop in Sept 1918, so probably not much help in this case!

My great uncle was presented with medal at civic ceremony after war and this was reported in local press, so search of local newspapers where your relative lived might also be worthwhile.

Sandy

The second line (just below Prom. Sergt.) looks like varicose veins, so in the lines below I would interpret Gen H as General Hospital and B H as Base Hospital, especially since the line above the medal award looks like still a patient.

Instinct suggests that his act of bravery was followed by a field promotion in May.
