Hi Margp

I only have the GRO ref at present for the marriage to Edith Jane Mitchell in Exeter RD.  However I have a date, which comes from my parents earlier research, but is uncited, 27 Nov 1873.

Spark

27th Nov 1873 would fit nicely with this marriage.

MITCHELL    Edith Jane         Exeter    5b   215
White    Thomas         Exeter    5b   215

Just a thought, the grant of administration is a legal process usually involving a sworn statement to the court confirming that you are a suitable person and are who you say you are, she may have claimed to be Mrs hellier, but if they were not married it would be a bit risky.

I thought though that you could call yourself anything you like, as long as you are not trying to defraud. I suppose it depended how thorough the solicitor was, whether he asked for proof of marriage or just took her word for it. When I had to swear an oath, when there was a problem with my mother's will, I wasn't asked to prove who I was. The solicitor just heard the oath, signed the paper and pocketed the £10.  ;D

when I applied for admin. as opposed to probate,.. the court documents had to go to every potential beneficiary, who had to agree to me acting, also if they were not actually married any children of mr hellier, or any of his brothers and sisters would have a prior claim.

A relative applying for admin. for her late husband had to make an appearance in court to get her grant, I don't think it was any easier in 1921

now this is strange, Ernest E Hellier born Bristol 1854, a boarder in Torquay in 1881, in tiverton in 1891.
There is a marriage in tiverton for an Ernest Edwin Hellard with a possible Elizabeth JANE  Bowers in 1890.

A bit of a coincidence

I thought it might be, but with him accounted for that leaves no other E Hellier birth on freebmd or familysearch.

I could not find a probable death for Thomas White, in the expected window before 1881.  Found a possible in 1885 Exeter RD - ordered today.  if it is my man, supports abandonment hypothesis and ties in with 1885 as Hellier "marriage".

Will wait on the post.
