There is a LMW, widow aged 49, born Bristol, living on own means at The Priory, Putney.

That is interesting.  Did not know The Priory had been a psychiatric hospital as early as 1872:

Yes, I believe it was fairly forward thinking at the time compared with the enormous places like Banstead Asylum which were pretty horrendous.  The Priory probably catered for more affluent clientele as well.

You could try approaching The Priory and asking them to check in their archives if LMW is the same person.  If the records still exist, you might be able to see the medical file.

Just to finish off this thread, just in case it's useful to someone else.

I emailed The Priory, and received a friendly reply. Their in-patient records are kept for 20 years and then confidentially destroyed. No historical records were retained in the archives of the current business managed by the Priory Group since 1980.

However, we're pretty sure that LMW is our girl. Many thanks to Freespirit1.
