"Badges" on Stoker's Naval Record
« on: Thursday 26 June 14 14:53 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am enquiring as to whether anyone knows of a list of what the actual badges are for a stoker.

On my great Uncles record, he has 3 badges listed, which I assume relate to his progression as a stoker.

The actual badges listed on his records are:

G 1.5.7.13
D 15.11.15
R 1.5.5.16 / 1

I did wonder whether the last digits were the year, but they are shown on his record next to periods of service with conflicting dates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Apologies, I should have posted this in WW 1.

What date did he enlist? If he started as a 'Boy' what is the date he was promoted 'Ord(inary) Seaman?

If the first date corresponds to his enlistment or becoming 18, G will be for Granted. If so R will be Restored, and D will mean taken away. In the army Good Conduct Badges were Forfeited. RN may have used something else. Maybe D = Deprived.

GC badges were worth one penny a day. If it is R 15.5 rather than R 1.5.5 then he lost his penny a day for six months.

Thank you for that.

He enlisted on 6 Jul 1910 as a Stoker II, so he was 18 when he enlisted.  One year later he was a Stoker I.

25 May 1917 as an Acting Leading Stoker, then 25 Nov as a Leading Stoker.

The first badge is shown on day of enlistment, the second on 5 Nov 1910 & the third on 25 Jul 1911.

I assume I'm not allowed to post the original for copyright reasons.

So it is G 1, D 1 and R 1. With '1' being one badge. Then a date.

You can post part of the record for an interpretation.
