Hello Stan,

Ed Cadby was a Corporal in the 29th Regiment at the time of his marriage. (Hence you may just find some service records for him on Find My Past if you are a subscriber to that site.)

His father was Edward Cadby, Baker. Mother was Elizabeth Barnes.

Elizabeth Cook's father was William Cook -- Nailmaker. Oddly, no mother's name has been given.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

There is a document in the National Archives - WO12/4545 - which lists those in the 1st Battalion of the 29th Foot at Aldershot in 1861. It includes Edward Cadby, service number 602.

Scroll down for Edward.

Treat Edward's information with a bucket of salt. Has been a lot of head scratching by various people over the years about Edward's origins.

He deserted from his regiment after his marriage, and we then lose sight of him until he and Elizabeth turn up in Gateshead in 1865 with the registration of the birth of their second son, under the assumed name by which the family is known from that time forward.

Which child are you descended from?

Hi

I have come across this post but was trying to make sense of Edward Cadby. I have a copy of his marriage certificate which was produced in 1947. I believe he may of changed his surname to Mayne when he was in Gateshead but I’m unsure why. Wondering if anyone could shed any light
