Axe family in East London
« on: Monday 30 June 14 15:22 BST (UK) »
I am researching the name 'Axe' in Hoxton/East London/London generally, pre 1800.  Particularly 'brickwall' of brothers John,. Thomas & Samuel Axe.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Have you had at look at the London Lives site? www.londonlives.org  - there are some Axe references on there which might be helpful  :)

There are some Axe names on familysearch.org
The first one to arrive in London seems to be 1784.

Thank you for your suggestions, but have already looked at London Lives.  Two of the brothers were licensed victuallers in Hoxton but have certainly reached that brick wall with them.  Earliest record of them is 1802.  Any thoughts?

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

For the best chance of help here, you may like to post specific information on the people you are looking for, and tell us what you already have on them (to avoid duplication of effort).

For example, a Thomas AXE was buried at Bunhill Fields from Hoxton Old Town on 26 April 1833, aged 57, so born around 1776. Is he one of yours?

Yes he is my direct ancestor.  He had two brothers John also a licensed victualler who died in 1831 living in Leyton but have not found his death (or birth), and another brother Samuel who died in 1838, he was a bricklayer who was buried at St Leonards in Shoreditch.  They also had a sister called Jane - all the brothers made wills so information there but can't find anything about them before 1802

Don't know if this is any help but
Samuel 09/11/1792 non conformists
Joseph 19/10/1790      ditto
Mary 05/04/1788         ditto

John 29/10/1801 Shoreditch
Elizabeth 10/05/1795  ditto
All cgildren of John and Mary

Also Leyton at the time was Essex and Bunhill was mainly a non conformists burial ground.

Edit earliest married found between John and Mary was the banns in December 1777 between John Axe and Mary Phillips

Thank you.  To make matters more confusing there were in actual fact two John Axes - John Axe who married Mary Phillips was an Excise man (actually a permit writer) although he put excise man on birth records of his children and died in 1797 - have checked this from Excise records at Kew, and John Axe the publican who married in 1795 to Mary Talbot..  John Axe excise man had his children baptised in White Row non conformist chapel and lived in Bethnal Green and John Axe publican had his children baptised at St Leonards Shoreditch and lived in Hoxton - took ages to work it all out I can tell you, but finally got it sorted I hope.  Just can't find anything definite before this.  Think John Axe excise man is connected somehow to the Axe family at St Anne's Limehouse, but quite sure how  Can anyone help?
