I am trying to trace birth details (and thereby, hopefully, parents' names) of John Owen (sorry -- common name!) and Elizabeth Jones (another common name :() who were married in parish of Dolgellau on 31st October 1778.

This is all I presently know about them:

They next pop up in Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire in 1782 (baptismal record of oldest child), when John is working as a stay-maker.  Since (I imagine!) this was a job that required some training, it seems to me possible that John's father was also a stay-maker, who passed his craft on to his son(s); and that John then moved on to Machynlleth because there was not a big enough market for stays in Dolgellau to support his working there.  (Of course, it is also possible that his parents were resident in Machynlleth all along, and it is only John's wife, Elizabeth, who hails from Dolgellau -- but one has to start searching somewhere!).

Their children's names, in birth order, are: David, John, Rod(g)er, Jane, Margaret, Anne and Griffin/Griffith -- all born in Machynlleth, and at roughly three year intervals.

Any assistance anyone can give me (including ideas of new avenues to search) would be very much appreciated.  Unfortunately, I am resident in USA so can only search on the internet.

Very many thanks.

Hi

FindMyPast has records for Dolgellau:

http://www.findmypast.co.uk

It's a pay site and has had some bad publicity recently but I managed to get a listing of baptisms in the Merionethshire parish records section - use Dolgellau as a keyword when searching the parish records.

Hiya, Gadget! :D

How're you doing?!

Thanks for the tip.  I don't much like findmypast -- don't find them very user-friendly, somehow; but if there's a chance they may have what I'm looking for, I will certainly give them a go.

Many thanks for the suggestion.
