Help to determine Regiment
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 08:56 BST (UK) »
I have just been given this photo of my great-great grandfather. Can someone possibly tell me what WW1 Regiment he was in? I am unable to clearly see the insignia on his cap. Many thanks

Hi

The Cap Badge looks like  the " General Service Corps 1908/1935 ".

Thank you both,

No, it is not the Boer War but WWI.
Undoubtedly a Manchester link, as Samuel Oliver lived in Newton Heath. I think that there is an "oak" tree in the centre? Given Samuel's age at the time, could he have belonged to some sort of territorial unit?

Hi, did he see service prior to WWI? as Ady ask's regarding possible Boar war ribbons and your comment regarding his age, could he have served prior to the outbreak of the first world war.

Frank,

No, as far as I know, Samuel did not serve before WW I.
I must admit, I don't know much about him as my grandfather was raised by his own grandparents and never spoke of his parents and other brother and sisters! These family members have only come to light in the past few weeks!

I have a cunning plan!

If you have a look at the National Archive medal card index there are 46 entries for Samuel Oliver.  By a process of elimination you can check the regiment cap badges and discard all those which don't match the photo and hopefully be left with the right one.

Incidentally, there are on the index:
Medal card of Oliver, Samuel H R. Corps: Manchester Regiment. Regiment No: 47260. Rank: Private
Medal card of Oliver, Samuel W. Corps: Manchester Regiment. Regiment No: 53356. Rank: Private.
which might be your man.

Good hunting!
Philip

Philip,

I think I have now exhausted every card in the National Archives and have possibly found "my" Samuel Oliver Taylor. Regiment 230 N° 201106, Private, Rifle Brigade.
But, which Rifle Brigade? enlisted when? discharged when? served where? All these questions promise more long hours of frustrating and fascinating research.

Thank you all for your interest and help
