Elizabeth Croft and Joseph Deighton
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 15:22 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone shed any light on the following?

I have an Elizabeth Croft baptised on December 23rd 1679 at Aycliffe, daughter of a William Croft and his wife Elizabeth Bishopbrig/Bishopbridge/Bishoprick.

Elizabeth Croft married as her first husband a William Laybourne/Layburn/Leyburn on April 29th 1710 at Kirk Merrington and had the following issue:

William 1711, Mary 1712 and Robert 1714.

Elizabeth then married (as Elizabeth Laybourne, widow) on February 26th 1717 at Staindrop a Joseph Deighton and had further issue. The marriage bonds for this marriage say Joseph Deighton was of Headlam, Gainford, and Elizabeth of Staindrop. A witness was John Emerson of Headlam, Gainford, Yeoman.

Can anyone help with Joseph Deighton parents at all? I can only find a Joseph Deighton baptised on October 4th 1691 at Great Smeaton, Yorkshire, son of a Thomas Deighton. There is also a William Deighton baptised on November 25th 1701, and Elizabeth baptised February 9th 1698, also at Great Smeaton. There is also an Elizabeth Deighton buried April 14th 1691 Great Smeaton (father Thomas).

There is a couple of family trees on Ancestry which give Thomas Deighton marrying an Elizabeth Reed on January 19th 1687 at Aycliffe but they seem to list other children born all over the place!

Elizabeth Deighton (formerly Laybourne, nee Croft) died on August 13th 1752 at Winston, Durham and is buried with her son Matthias Deighton and his wife Mary.

Any help much appreciated! :D
