Army Service records by serial number
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 16:58 BST (UK) »
Looking at a case involving a friends father, mother passed away without giving any info at all regarding his biological father who according to his birth cert had died before he was born in 1946, on his birth certificate it gives name and army number (1068275), however on contacting military and MOD they state that the number does not match the name so will not hand over any information.
Question: is there any where to find a name just by having the serial number, it appears his mother was covering something up and he is desperate to find out more. To make matters worse his mother claims to have been married to him but there is no record of a marriage.

Have you checked the CWGC incase the certificate contains a typo in the service number? The number given falls within the Royal Artillery block

Checked the Graves site, he isn't mentioned anywhere as a casualty. The MOD said it was a Royal Artillery number although he was in the Royal Army Service Corp. All this assumes the information on the certificate wasn't a pack of lies and there was some substance to it.

I checked the CWGC site just by the service number and nothing comes up. If you check military records on FindMyPast for the number it comes up in the Royal Artillery Attestations. The man in question was born in St Georges New Mills , Derbyshire 28 Mar 1907 . I haven't given the name but let me know if you can't find it. Have you tried to find a death record for the name you have ?

Interesting. I think there maybe a typo in the service number as the RASC number block runs between 1 and 294,000 and then 10660001 to 11000000.  Unlike WW1, WW2 service numbers didn't change even if the soldier transferred to another regiment (unless they were commissioned). 1068275 may have the final number missing, but having tried a variety of number combinations, I still can't find a viable casualty.

Checked the number again on Find my past (hate that new search engine) and found the guy you referred to, it was in 1926, did the army reuse numbers or as suspected the number is incorrect.
