Francis Hodgson of Hamsterley
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 17:14 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

I have a Francis Hodgson baptised at Hamsterley on June 3rd 1656, son of a Ralph Hodgson. Francis Hodgson married Mary Brown at Hamsterley on September 28th 1680 and is listed as being the father of:

Margaret Hodgson bapt 17 march 1689

Mary Hodgson bapt 17 march 1689

Ralph Hodgson bapt 12 may 1693

John Hodgson bapt 14 October 1698

Jane Hodgson bapt 20 September 1699

Ann Hodgson bapt 18 January 1701

Isabel Hodgson bapt 3 march 1703

One source says Francis was a widow by 1684 and remarried an Elizabeth Hodgson?

I cannot find a marriage of Francis to Elizabeth at all.

There are also a number of children all baptised at Hamsterley, listed as children of Ralph Hodgson including:

Mary 1 april 1643
Elizabeth 28 November 1644
Ann 26 june 1646
Ralph 4 april 1647
Ralph 7 april 1648
Grace 10 February 1650
Joseph 6 October 1650
Mary 5 February 1652
Dorothy 10 july 1653
Jane 4 december 1653
Francis 3 june 1656
William 18 December 1656
John 3 june 1663
William 18 December 1664

The only marriages I can find for a Ralph Hodgson are two:

On 4 august 1651 at Hamsterley to Ann Atkinson, and another 17 September 1651 at Hamsterley to a Dorothy Watson, which certainly doesn't help matters!

Any help with any of the above very much appreciated! :D

Hodgson is such a common name in that area that it would not be surprising if there were two named Ralph who married and had children at much the same time.  Trying to work out which children belong to each will be a nightmare if that is the case.

Hi

Don't know if this is a help but there is a marriage in Witton le Wear which is only a couple of miles from Hamsterley. Could the letter 'l' be mistaken for an 'i' ?

10 Oct 1637 St Philip and St James

RAIPH Hodgshon married Eliza Richardson.

That does sound possible as couples usually married in the bride's parish.   Ralph can be pronounced "Rafe" as well.
