Any info? Sapper Stanley Albert Edwards 5952530
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 18:39 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Anyone able to find any info on my Nan's first husband, Stanley Albert Edwards? Rank of Sapper, Army number 5952530. All I can find is information on his grave, at Thundridge, Herts, which is correct. My Nan told me that he died at Dunkerque and I would love to know more.

Born 3 March 1919, Stapleford, Hertford Hertfordshire
Died 17 July 1944
Married my Nan, Elsie Mary Marshall in 1941.

Thanks

Adam

Hi,

A copy of his death certificate would help but I've not been able to find the registration.   :(

Ive not found one. My Nan is still alive so I should be able to get his records without the need to pay £30 as she was married to him at the time.

The only death record I can find for his birth and death dates is for a death in Poplar, London. That suggests he may have been wounded overseas but died from his wounds in the UK. If he had died overseas then he would not have been brought back to the UK. His records May throw some light on this.

Try Local rolls of honour. If he died in service he should be on a war memorial somewhere. Perhaps St Marys church Thundridge have a roll of honour or Hertford town council. These sometimes state the action or place of death. You will have a long wait for his service records so get started on a local search.

But it already seems that he died in Poplar, so applying for a copy of the death certificate might be the next step to determine the cause of death. Possibly in a hospital. It's difficult to see how he could have died at Dunquerke in July 1944 given that the British forces were still trying to get out of Normandy at that time. A possible scenario is that he was wounded at Dunquerke in 1940 but evacuated and died from his injuries in 1944. On the other hand he may have died from illness or simply in a traffic accident. The death certificate should throw light on this. Do you need the reference?

In the Times casualty lists he is listed as "died" rather than "killed in action" or "died of wounds". So could be either illness or non-military accident.

The war diaries for 28 Mechanical Equipment Section RE can be found under ref WO 171/1865. However, they are not digitized.
