*COMPLETED* Confusing census William Steele and family 1911
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 22:01 BST (UK) »
Hello

My ancestor William Steel, born in 1848 Hayton Cumberland is living in Cockermouth with his family Ann and children Frances, James and Hinnory Steel.

Looking at the census, there are some things that confuse me. William was married to a woman named Georgina in 1891, where has she gone? Has she died? Divorced?

On the census, two children are listed, John and Joseph Bowman Steel, both are them are listed, but the names are crossed out and dead is listed next to them, meaning they have died, when did they die?

Finally does the name Hinnory mean Henry? i think its been spelt wrong

Its a very interesting census entry, I appreciate any help

I see that in both the 1881 and 1891 census when William and Georgina are listed as living in Salford Lancashire, there are no children with them. I wonder if John and Joseph were his second wife's children.

In 1881, William and Ann are living with her brother John Bowman and the older children.

The question is  - is he your ancestor?

My comment is also that William changes occupation from Tailor to Farmer, it seems likely to me that there are two William Steels born around the same time at Hayton.

That looks very likely considering the use of the Bowman name. I think we are looking at two different Williams one who married Georgina and one who married Ann Bowman.
