John Okey of Luton Bedfordshire
« on: Friday 11 July 14 11:07 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

I have a John Okey and his wife Ann listed as having two children:

Mary Okey baptised 17 October 1731 Luton

Lydea Okey baptised 22 December 1734 Luton

Cannot find a marriage for John and Ann, nor his date of birth or parents??

I think Mary Okey married Francis Piggott on 2 February 1747 at Luton and had the following children:

Thomas Piggott baptised 9 October 1748 Luton

Francis Piggott baptised 16 December 1750 Luton

Hannah Piggott baptised 22 April 1753 Luton

Henry Piggott baptised 1 June 1755, died 3 February 1757 Luton

Elizabeth Piggott baptised 17 July 1757 Luton

Mary Piggott baptised 13 January 1760 Luton

Ann Piggott baptised 15 January 1762 Luton

Judah Piggott baptised 29 January 1766 Luton

The only other Mary Okey I can find is a one baptised on 24 August 1729 at Stroud, Gloucester, daughter of a Henry Okey and Mary Bagglin/Baggley, but family trees have her as marrying someone else and I think Stroud is over a 100 miles from Luton?

Any help much appreciated! :D

A John Okey married Mary Bayly in Luton on 29 Sep 1731. I'd be looking hard at the parish register to see if this entry and the baptism entries are correctly transcribed. There's also a Jeremiah Okey baptised in Luton in 1733 with no parents mentioned. But John and Mary baptised a Richard in 1734, only weeks before John and Ann baptised Lydia, so perhaps there really were two Johns. Only reference to the parish register can help sort this lot out.

Seems there were at least 2 John Oakey/Okey/Oakley about at that time as per the Luton parish register. Firstly John of Stopsley who married Jane Olney (#1) & then may have married Mary Gregory (#3) & then may have married Mary Bayle (#4). Neither of the marriages of John to Mary has him as a widower its just the burial/marriage dates are conveniently timed. Secondly we have John the wheelwright who married Ann Ions/Iarns (#2)

Marriage #1, 5 Jan 1723/24  John Oakey/Oakley to Jane Olney
They baptised....
Ann on 30 Dec 1724
John on 22 Nov 1726

Jane, wife of John Oakey of Stopsley was buried 10 Dec 1729

Marriage #2, 27 Jan 1726/27 John Oakey/Oakley to Ann Ions/Iarns
They baptised....
John on 1 Apr 1726 .... yes that is before the marriage
There are 2 entries the first says son of John Oakey & Ann Iarns with note Draft Register, & the second says son of John & Ann Oakey. He was buried 4 Feb 1726/27 father is a wheeler
Ann on 7 May 1727, father John is wheelwright. Buried 12 Feb 1727/28 father wheelwright
Ann on 15 Dec 1728, father John is wheelwright. Buried 1 Nov 1729
Mary on 17 Oct 1731
Lydia on 22 Dec 1734, buried 20 Feb 1739/40 daughter of late John Oakey
John Okey was buried 10 Nov 1734, there's an admon of John Okey wheelwright ref 1735/21 at Beds Archives

Marriage #3, 25 June 1730 John Oakey to Mary Gregory of Lilley by licence
Burial on 26 Aug 1730 of Mary, wife of John Oakey

Marriage #4, 29 Sept 1731 John Okey/Oakie to Mary Bayle

Thus this is the John & Mary who baptised Richard on 13 Oct 1734 ?

The baptism of Jeremiah Okey on 8 Nov 1733 has no parents but states he was aged 21
This makes him born around 1712.  He may be son of Nathaniel (& Ann) Oakey who were baptising children between 1696 & 1702 including a previous Jeremiah baptised 15 Jan 1699/1700 & buried 12 Mar 1701. They had another son Richard baptised late on 19 Sept 1726 who was born 1703, plus another son John baptised on 11 June 1723 as an adult so born 1702 or before. Nathaniel is described as farmer of Stopsley on some baptisms.

Any thoughts?

Hi!
It seems as though my Mary Okey baptised 17 October 1731 at Luton was the daughter of John Oakey who married Ann Jones on 27 January 1726 at Luton. Thanks to your help this John was buried on 10 November 1734.
Is there any records for the burial or re-marriage of his wife Ann?

Also is there a possible link for John Oakey/Okey being the son of Nathaniel Okey?

Will have a look at the research and get back to you, but many thanks as this information has been a great help!

There is a marriage on 15 Oct 1735 of Richard Thrussell to Ann Okey, but it don't say she's a widow.

I think Mary Okey married Francis Piggott on 2 February 1747 at Luton and had the following children:

They did, by licence dated 1 Feb 1747/48....

Mary OKEY, age 21 of Luton to marry Francis Piggott, age 30, yeoman of Luton; surety given by Thomas Goodyear, wheelwright of Luton.

If Mary was 21 then she'd be born circa 1727, so she could well be the Mary, daughter of John & Ann baptised 17 Oct 1731, plus there is the wheelwright connection.

The baptisms of their children are as you've said except the last one is Judith, daughter of.... rather than Judah. A number of the entries state that they were from Stopsley.
