Hall or Silcock?
« on: Friday 11 July 14 20:29 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Can anybody solve this surname mystery?

I can firstly find William Hall born around 1843 in Corbridge, Northumberland lodging in Coundon, County Durham in 1861.
I believe that he then went on the marry a Pamela Laskey (Auckland RD) during the June quarter of 1866 as William Hall Sillcock.
They appear on the 1871 census living in New Coundon - William Hall born 1843 (Corbridge) Pamela seems to be spelt as Amelia and they have two children, Edith and Mary Ann.
By 1881 William now appears as William Hall Silcock (born 1843 - Corbridge) - wife Pamelia (Pamela), children, Edith, Louisa, Thomas and John George - still living in Coundon.
He has remarried by 1891 to an Alice (can't find Pamela/Amelia's death or his remarriage), but the family have now relocated to Ryhope and are listed as 'Hall'.
They remain as Hall and the 1911 census finds William and Alice living in New Smith Street, Ryhope, where they claim to have been married for 25 years.
William's son, John George, married Jane Ann Dunn in Sunderland on the 8th June 1901 as John George Hall, but appears on the 1901 census, shortly before the marriage, with the Dunn family as John George Silcox.

Can anybody shed any light on the Silcock/Silcox mystery? Or find William in 1851? Or find any information on his two wives?

Any tiny piece of information would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Sue

1851 census Coundon, Durham

Could this be William.  He is with his parents and siblings who all seem to be born in Brampton, Derbyshire

If this is the correct family, Familysearch has a marriage between Thomas Hall and Sarah Unwin at St Peter, Old Brampton, Derbyshire on 3 July 1826

I did notice that there were some Silcock families in Brampton. Not sure how common the name is though, it could be just coincidence

Thanks for that! I believe that we may have the right family as the 1861 census finds William with a widow, Harriet Maughan, and her children living in Coundon.
Harriet is 29 years of age, and, if it is the correct family, William had a sister, Harriet, aged 19 years on the 1851 census.
Can't find a marriage though between a Hall and a Maughan.

Just found it _
Harriet Hall Silcock married Moses Maughan during the march quarter of 1855 (Auckland)
Where does 'Silcock' come from????
