Help reading mother's maiden name
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 13:38 BST (UK) »
Hi

Wondering if anyone can read the mother's maiden name? I have her mother's maiden name on her death entry but it looks totally different from this. This is from her marriage to her 71 year old toy boy ;D.

Thanks
Eric

My first thought is "Essit", which doesn't sound like a proper surname.

I think I should have another look at that surname.  :)

Starts with E, then two letters, then i t.

Looking more closely I don't think the second letter is s as I first thought.

Ea? :-\

Have you checked Scotland's People for a corresponding John Sneddon / Janet E--it(?) marriage?
Also, if the person in question had any siblings you could check their marriage and death certificates to see if Janet's maiden surname is any clearer.

Added: Um, maybe second letter IS s. I have been tracing over the letters and even though it looks different from the other esses on the page, I can't see it being anything else ...

I will be very interested to see how others see this surname. :)

I agree the first letter does look like an E and the ending is it, but what is the middle? Nothing of the shape of the letters makes any sense. Not giving much away the name on the death entry starts with a J. I have had a look on ScotlandsPeople and FamilySearch but cannot find anything for a John Sn* and a Janet *. Problem is Sneddon can be spelled in so many ways and appears to have morphed from Sna*don to Sneddon (and variants). I have no knowledge of any siblings that would help with identifying the mother.

Hi Eric

It does look like Essit/Esset but can't find anything.

What was the date of the marriage?

Is the other surname similar enough for it to have been misheard? eg Pessit or Pettit possibly could mistakenly be written Essit?  :-\ Clutching at straws here ....

If you are sure you have the right death, would you like to either tell us what the MMName beginning with P is, or post a snip of it here?  :-\

I was just coming to that conclusion also Ladyhawke.

Easit is an uncommon name but it does appear in the GRO BMDs mainly in Northumberland.

Just so you know, I deal a lot with Scotland's People and I have requested many rescans of records that I have paid for, downloaded and then can't read. They're very good about it, and you usually get the new legible record in about 2 days. :)
