Help with words in Johnson will?
« on: Monday 14 July 14 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hello all

Came across another will, this time of my 8x Great Grandfather, Ephraim Johnson of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland.

I would really appreciate some help on some of the words, please.

I can read the majority of the attachment, but struggle with the following and would like some confirmation/suggestions:

"this my Last Will & Testament in manor? (manner) & forms? following"
and
"my body to be buryed at the Dis???? of my W??? in named Executors?"

Thanks! :)

Hi

"this my Last Will & Testament in maner
& forms following"

The 'e' in maner (ie: manner) is the usual form, and is the same as the first e in 'bequeath', next line.

"my body to be buryed at (the*) discretion of
my w.thin named Executor"
(ie his nominated Executor who is named within the Will).

The (word*) is surely meant to be 'the', but possibly is a shorthand form  - is there another definite word that can only be  'the' elsewhere in the document that looks the same?

Cheers

It is "the" but the "th" is rendered as the old letter thorn which in some of its forms looks like a y.  Hence lots of people thinking people used to say "ye olde" etc.

Hello AMBLY and avm

Thank you very much. This has helped a great deal. Words and letter always look so obvious when someone points them out. I am very grateful.

There is no definite 'the' in the will at all, only the old letter thorn. Great bit of knowledge there, avm, learn something new everyday...

Thanks again!

Hello again

I have been finishing off transcribing Ephraim Johnson's will just now and would appreciate some more help with the following, please.

In the first attachment the word before "Legacies" and the words following afterwards before "being first discharged".

In the second attachment I am a little confused over the two dates written.

"on this 30th Day of November? in (the) Eleventh year of (the) reign of Willm (the) Third King of England &? ??? June 1699" Can anyone suggest anything for this please?

Cheers!
