Is this Will in English or Latin?
« on: Tuesday 15 July 14 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hello chatters!

This is the first page of a will I obtained yesterday for my 12x gt grandfather, Charles WALLANGE of Dunfermline. I cannot make any of it out at all despite his name and I am wondering if anyone can read any part of it, and possibly ascertain what language it is in please? It seems to have been written in the 1570s but I am not sure as I can't match it up with any burial.

I'd be grateful for any help on this please so I can teach myself how to read it properly (IF it's in English!)

Neither, it's in Scots. ;D

A good dictionary to bookmark when deciphering these testaments is http://www.dsl.ac.uk/

Another good resource is http://www.scottishhandwriting.com/

Let us know if you want help with any parts in particular.

Hi Alexander...thanks a bunch!

I've had a quick look at it makes slightly more legible but it's going to take some time. Would you mind having a go at perhaps the first two or three lines for me please to get me started? I'll be able to see what letters look like then, because I've tried with various templates online and I seem to be missing something!

Thanks again for your informative and very swift response!

Hi Alexander,

Thank you for that - it has proved just how much I have to learn and how much of a pain this might be :-\ Fascinating just to see how much the language changes in that short excerpt though! I may need to spend several days going through this and seeing if I can make out individual words first so I may be asking for help again soon! I don't want to put it down now  ;D

Thanks again...it's an uphill climb but I'll get there!
