GARVEY & HAMMOND marriage (catholic ?) in Lake District 1913-1923
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 07:06 BST (UK) »
NOTE:  This message is also posted on the following boards for lookups - Lancashire, Yorkshire, Durham

Trying to find marriage record for my 91 year old grandmother's parents Loretta Theresa Garvey (b 1887) and George William Hammond (b 1866).

Marriage more likely took place 1920-1922 because 1st child of the marriage was born 1923.

Second marriage for George after he was widowed in 1913 and first marriage for Loretta who was Catholic and grew up in Sunderland (St Mary's).  George was a farmer who lived at house called "NewFound England" (now in Catterick MOD training grounds) in Grinton/Aysgarth/Thornton Rust area of Yorkshire.

No luck with BMD indexes after manual search on both surnames.  Family members have looked through numerous parish registers in Sunderland and Aysgarth area.  Prior to her marriage, Loretta worked as a nanny for a family that visited the Lake District often and was thought to be quite fond of the area and so we are now thinking she may have chosen to get married here.  (Dalton-in-Furness is one place in the Lake District that she visited)

It's a lot of ground to cover and I'm over in Canada, so I'm hoping for some help.  Even an unsuccessful lookup will be useful information.

Any marriage will have been registered, and therefore available on the GRO Indexes?
FreeBMD has transcribed those indexes (coverage  up to the 1940s is excellent; after wards is patchy).

Are you sure that George's first wife had died? :-\

Have also looked to see if they hopped over the border from Cumberland to Scotland, but cannot find them there either.

To Craclyn:  Thank you for taking the time.  I have also searched ancestry.com quite extensively with no luck.

To KGarrad:

That they might never have married is definitely a possibility, but of course proving something didn't happen is also tough!  And so we keep on hoping and keep on looking. :-\

Besides, my grandmother is quite adamant that her mother was a good catholic girl who would never have considered living in sin! ;) ;) ;)

Hello,
Do you have details of George's first marriage and the death of his wife?
Have you checked that?
Heywood

Added- found it, I think Frances Hammond?
