1910 Stockton Marriage
« on: Monday 21 July 14 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to locate the marriage of John and Sarah Thompson (formerly Wilson) in 1910 in Stockton/Durham. The 1911 census says they were married a year but I cannot locate the marriage on freebmd or ancestry.

Please could someone help me?

Thanks
Sam

Welcome Sam

Have you considered the possibility that Sarah was married previously?  You may need to search for a John Thompson marrying a Sarah without specifying the surname, in case she came into the marriage with a previous married name.

Also: consider widening the marriage search outside the area, especially if they were not born locally.

Hiya, welcome to Rootschat!

People were not necessarily the most truthful on census returns;  do you happen to know if they had middle names?  That may help narrow down the correct couple.

Hi avm228,

I have not considered this. My next step was to see if I could find Sarah (Wilson) on the 1901 census and see if john Thompson was on there too. I just wanted to see if I could find the marriage as this seems to be the only one I cannot find.

Hi Spidermonkey,

I was thinking they might have twisted the truth. I do not know of any middle names I'm afraid. I wish I had more information.

Their age in 1911 also increases the likelihood that Sarah may have had a previous marriage. In addition to the suggestion from Chooch there is also a John Thomas Thompson who may have married a Sarah Randall in Q1 1910. Your next step should be to look for an appropriate marriage for Sarah Wilson to Mr. Crosby or Mr. Randall.

Hi Cooch,

Crosby rings a bell, not sure why. I will have to look into this and see if she remarried. Thanks for your help.

Hi Craclyn,

I will have to look deeper into these names. I know her name was Wilson from her daughters birth certificate but this could have been her previous marital name. Thanks for your help.

The name on her daughter's birth cert should be her maiden name. If there was an earlier marriage then you should be looking for:
- Sarah Wilson married Mr. X before 1910
- Sarah X married John Thompson about 1910.

Hi Craclyn,

I have found a marriage of John Thompson and Sarah Crosby in 1910. So I believe she must have married a Crosby before hand.

My next step is to locate a marriage between Sarah Wilson and ... Crosby. Once I find that, I think the problem has been solved.

Thank you to everyone who has been helping me! I appreciate it.
