My father has received the birth certificate of Eric.

His full name was; Eric Maurice Cyrill Carter (b. 10 September 1908, Turibat-i-Hidiari Persia. His father was William and his occupation was; Telegraphist for the Indian Telegraph Department.

Eric's mother was Emily Zuleire Jane James. There are no records of her birth in the UK indexes but a death records in Q2 1968, Machynlleth (Wales). Her year of birth was given as circa 1879.

That's great news, confirming William with the occupation we expected/hoped for him.

Do let us know when Eric's birth certificate arrives.

Apologies but I have been told it was a birth certificate he ordered and not a marriage. :(

This must be the marriage, then, in 1902:

William Carter to Emily Zaleine James, in Bikaner Rajputana.  Her father was William Harvey James.

In terms of figuring out Bonnie, a next move may be the purchase of Emily's death certificate and/or checking to see if she left a will:
https://www.gov.uk/wills-probate-inheritance/searching-for-probate-records

Also, I see she appears to be in the London electoral rolls for several years (spelling "Zuliene" or just as Emily Z J) .  Perhaps other family members are with her?

Eric marries in Finsbury in 1936 and again in Edmonton in 1947 - electoral rolls 1937 and 1946 to 1965 show him with his successive wives living with Emily at addresses in north London.

No sign of any other Carters with them, unfortunately.

Eric and his wife were without Emily in 1938 and 1939.  I have not found her in those years.

Added:it looks as though Eric was divorced from his first wife & that she remarried in Islington in 1950.

Thank you all for the information you have found, it has been very useful. We don't believe that Emily's death certificate will serve any help to us as we already know that she died in Machynlleth and was living with her son Eric and his wife Muriel whom both died there also. It's highly unlikely she left a will.

During the 1920's William and Emily lived in Llandudno in North Wales. Bonnie at that time was working the oil fields in Persia and used to visit my grandmother's parents in Sheffield when he was home on leave. We have a photo of him with my nan, the back of which is dated 1927. It is not known if he ever lived in England has some time later in his life he owned a hotel in (we believe) Cape Town, South Africa. William and Emily split up and we was told he died penniless in Brighton and is highly unlikely that a will of any note will have been left. We had an address to where he was living but unfortunately my father is unable to find it.

Maybe Cape Town has some equivalent of Trade Directories that you can use to look for him as a hotel owner.
