James Steel missing from census 1881 - 1911
« on: Monday 21 July 14 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hello

James Steel, son of John and Isabella Steel, born 1851 in Kirklinton can be found on the 1881 census married to Margaret Graham with children Bella Jane and Margaret.

I cannot find the family on the 1891 and 1901 census, however he reappears in 1911 widowed living with a daughter Isabella Jane married to John Hoodless.

Could someone please help locate them in the 1891 and 1901 census, also I cannot find a birth year for Bella Jane in 1879, but one in 1894, is this an error?

my thanks

What's found me puzzled is why all of Isabella's children are listed as Hoodless, but Maggie Mabel is listed as Steel, was she illegitimate? She could have been since this was three years before she married Hoodless.

Also, James is a widower, the only compatible death is 1898 Carlisle, though the age is a bit off

Given she's there in 1901 as Steel(e), as is Isabella Jane, one assumes yes she was illegitimate
