Richard Cornish of Perranarworthal
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 09:14 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am seeking help looking for Richard CORNISH, my gg grandfather,  born Jul-Sep 1841, son Of Thomas Cornish and Martha Wills of Perranarworthal, Cornwall. Richard was a miner, (appears 1851 census age 9). Married Mary Ann Anstey 22 August 1861 (she living with father in 1861 census). Can't find any mention of Richard anywhere after 1867. Richard and Mary Ann had 4 children, Emily, Eliza, Thomas and Maria Jane between 1862-67. Mary Ann, on 1871 census listed as married, Richard not listed, children listed. On 1881 census she is listed as a widow. I believe he died in 1871, but not sure. Mary Ann and the children emigrated to Australia in 1881. There was a Richard Cornish died in Shoreditch, London in June 1871, but not my relation. I have hit the brick wall, any help appreciated.

Sorry am struggling to find Mary Ann and the children on census - where are they living?
Is the surname spelt correctly on the census?
Thanks  :)

Baptism for son Thomas was 27 Feb 1872 * I wonder if that date is significant ie was it after Richard had died.
Would it say on the original record if father deceased I wonder  :-\

* same baptism date for daughter Maria Jane.

I too am struggling to sort out this family.

There are 4 baptisms of Cornish children on 27 February 1872 with parents Richard and Mary Ann

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/baptisms/

I have checked the images which are available on family search but no ages or dates of birth are given.

Have you found corresponding births registered in England?

In 1881 I can see a Mary Ann Cornish aged 39 born Mylor with 2 children, Thomas aged 16 and Jane aged 14.  The children are stated to be born in "Perran".  Mary is a widow and they are living in Mylor.

I can't, at present, see this family in 1871.  Will continue looking.

Barbara try under surname Carrick for 1871 :)

Pity no notes on the baptisms saying father deceased.  There must be a reason they were all done at once some years after they were born.

Sorry posts crossed!

That sorts us out a bit then!

I wonder if Richard went out to Australia in advance of wife and family?  That was quite common.  Maybe other members of the family were out there which is why Mary Ann emigrated in 1881?
