Headstone Epitaph
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 13:04 BST (UK) »
Hi All. I'm having trouble reading the epitaph on my 4xg.grandfathers headstone who died in 1801 so it's quite old. so far with the help of Google I think I've managed to transcribe as follows:
Afflictions sore long time I bore
Physicians were in vain
Till God did please Death should ---------?
To free me from my (this?) pain
In love I lived in peace I died
My life ------? but God denied
Therefore dear friend ---------? be
Prepare for death and follow me
I've attached what I think is the best photo so hopefully someone can read the missing words?
Possibly need to attach on new entry.

The first part was a well-known epitaph at the time, yours will probably go like this:

Affliction sore long time I bore,
Physicians were in vain --
Till God at last did hear me mourn,
And eased me of my pain.

Here's another one, which may match in part the second part of yours:

In love I lived; in peace I died.
You asked my life but God denied.
Farewell, dear friends, and cease to weep.
In Christ I dwell; in Christ I sleep”
