Eleanor Steele 1880 Missing from census
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 19:18 BST (UK) »
Hello

Eleanor Steele, born 1880 to Walter and Martha Steele in All Hallows Cumberland. She is on the 1881 census as Eleanor Stelle.

However she disappears from the censuses after that and there is no compatible death record

Any help would be appreciated

thanks

Hi,

Could this be the family on the 1891?

Walter Steele   54
Martha Steele   49
Walter Steele   17
Hannah Steele   13
Ellen Steele   11
Josephine Steele   9
Elizabeth Steele   9
Edith Steele   6
Walter Carroll   4
Jonathan Steele   1

If so perhaps Ellen is Eleanor.

Is she not the 11yr old Ellen with parents Walter & Martha in 1891?

Edit - sorry Jen - pc froze whilst posting above so didn't see your reply

I would agree with both of the posters above since the two older children in 1891 also fit with those in 1881.

There is no birth record for Ellen Steele c.1880, Cumberland, however there is a birth of an Eleanor Steele.

Perhaps the birth record was under Eleanor, but later became Ellen  :)

Eleanor and Ellen are basically the same name. I have 4 Eleanors in my tree who switch back and forth between Eleanor and Ellen depending on which record you read.

She isn't living with her family in 1901 census. So I guessed she was married or dead. No marriage records match, however after checking the death records for an Ellen Steele, I found out she died in 1895 aged 15

However I cannot a Eleanor Steele born in 1880 in Wigton

Good find, the death was recorded in Wigton which is the same area for the 1891  :)

Mystery over........
