Aberdeenshire marriage
« on: Friday 25 July 14 14:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone make sense of the Feb 8th 1801 entry? Is this one couple or two and can I safely assume the first name would be the groom's.
Thanks
Jen

Just a guess from me, but it looks to be two couples. There are numbers listed in the column on the right, one for each couple, presumably payment of some sort. If you look at others on the list, proclamation money is '5' and pawns and proc money is '15'.  ;)

I'm sure someone who is more knowledgeable will know for certain.

Greetings!

First line: Neish and Frazer,  pawns & proc money
Second line: Sim (?) and Neish,  procl money

Looking at the other lines the man is listed first.

I presume that "pawns" has the same meaning as a bond or surety.

All the best
Philip

Thanks Ruskie and Philip I thought that said pawns too  ???. The money is 5, 15 or in in some cases not shown in the clip 10. Just trying to glean every bit of info from a less than informative OPR.

Hi

A pawn is

Pledge of good behaviour by a betrothed couple, usually a sum of money deposited with the Kirk Session

Proclamation money was pledge  money :

Notice of contract of marriage, read out in the Kirk before the marriage took place. Kirk Session minutes record the money pledged by the groom to ensure that the couple married within 40 days
