Where was James Marshall from?
« on: Friday 25 July 14 19:40 BST (UK) »
Can anyone work out where James Marshall's place of birth is given in this 1861 census extract? It has been transcribed as Kent, Lanbridge but it looks as if could be Herts or Kent and Lowbridge. However, I can't find a Lanbridge or Lowbridge anywhere!
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

Just to add: in the 1851 census his place of birth was given as Hurlford, and in 1871 he was in St Pancras Workhouse with a birth place given as London.

I do not think it is Kent as there is a Kent further down the page where the K looks different. I would try Herts or Hants. However, after a quick look at genuki for these two counties there is nothing that springs out as obvious.

Hi

I'd say it was Herts  - don't know the area so can't offer a place.

Or maybe Hunts? - but I can't see an obvious candidate for a town or parish there either.

Thanks all. It means he's NOT one of mine, which I suspected was the case, but always good to be able to eliminate someone.

The 1851 census entry has been transcribed as Hurlford by Ancestry and Hartford by FindMyPast.

Gadget - in 1851 he's at the same address as 1861 (Charles Street, St Pancras) and with the same occupation, so the James and Hannah you've found are not the same people.
